In an effort to give back something to the communities in which they live and work, the Crescent River Port Pilots have created the Crescent River Pilots’ Foundation, an organization committed to supporting charitable causes in Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard and St. Tammany Parishes.
Since 1908, the Crescent River Port Pilots have been serving Louisiana and the United States by safely and efficiently navigating ships along one of the most difficult and treacherous routes in North America: the 106-mile stretch of the Mississippi River between Pilottown and New Orleans. When foreign ships travel this stretch of the river, they are required by law to be accompanied by a pilot, who carefully guides the ship through the area. In taking on this duty, the Crescent River Port Pilots were given the task of protecting Louisiana’s most precious resources: its citizens and its environment. The Pilots have embraced this responsibility and are committed to ongoing community service and support, with a focus on the five parishes bordering their route: Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard and St. Tammany.
The Foundation was created on April 12, 2005, not long before South Louisiana was ravaged by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The devastation caused by these storms has shown that efforts by the Foundation are now more important than ever. As the people of Louisiana try to rebuild and the community attempts to redefine itself in this ever changing environment, the Foundation is here to lend a hand through community outreach and fund raising.
